Choosing to Cultivate Godly Relationships

By Andrew Williams

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” (Proverbs 13:20)

Good morning fellow disciples.

As followers of Christ, we are not meant to journey through life alone. God has designed us to thrive within the context of intentional, life-giving relationships that encourage us in our faith and challenge us to grow in holiness. Cultivating these types of godly relationships is essential for our spiritual well-being and the advancement of God’s Kingdom.

In Hebrews 10:24-25, we are exhorted not to neglect meeting together, but to “stir up one another to love and good works.” This passage underscores the vital role that community plays in our lives as believers. When we intentionally surround ourselves with others who share our faith, we create an environment of mutual encouragement, accountability, and spiritual growth.

Proverbs 13:20 reminds us that “whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” The company we keep has a profound impact on the trajectory of our lives. By choosing to associate with those who exemplify godly character and a commitment to living for Christ, we open ourselves up to being shaped and influenced by their example. Conversely, spending time with those who reject or disregard God’s ways can lead us down a path of compromise and spiritual decline.

The purpose of cultivating godly relationships is not merely for our own benefit, but for the benefit of the entire body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:33 warns us that “bad company corrupts good character,” but the inverse is also true: good company can strengthen and refine our character. As we intentionally invest in one another’s lives, we have the privilege of spurring each other on towards love and good deeds, and of building up the Church to be a powerful witness to the transformative power of the Gospel.

Choosing to cultivate godly relationships requires intentionality, vulnerability, and a willingness to step out of our comfort zones. It means prioritizing time with others who share our faith, and purposefully engaging in meaningful fellowship and accountability. As we do so, we will experience the profound joy and strength that comes from walking alongside fellow believers who are equally committed to following Christ and growing in their faith.

Prayer: Father God, we thank You for the gift of community and the importance You have placed on our relationships with one another. Forgive us for the times when we have isolated ourselves or surrounded ourselves with those who do not align with Your ways.

Help us to be intentional in cultivating Godly relationships that will encourage us in our faith and challenge us to grow in holiness. Give us the courage to step out of our comfort zones and invest in the lives of others, so that together we may spur one another on towards love and good works. Amen.
