Beyond Rooted to Reaching Up: Growth is Not Optional

November 3, 2025

By Andrew Williams

Opening Prayer
Father, thank you for planting us in Christ. Now, instill in us a holy desire to not just be rooted, but to reach up and grow.

Today’s Scripture (NLT)
2 Peter 3:18a
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Last week, we established the foundation of our Christian life: abiding. We are branches, rooted and secure in the Vine, Jesus Christ. But roots are not the end of the story. Roots are there to support growth. A healthy plant is a growing plant, constantly reaching for the sun. In the same way, a healthy Christian is a growing Christian.

This verse isn’t a suggestion; it’s a gentle command. We are to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord.” Spiritual maturity isn’t automatic. It doesn’t just happen because you’ve been a Christian for a long time. Growth is an intentional process, a decision to move beyond the starting line of salvation and press deeper into all that God has for us.

God’s desire for you is not that you would simply be saved, but that you would be transformed. He wants you to become more like Jesus, and that happens through intentional growth. This week, we are going to get practical about what it means to reach up, to stretch our faith, and to cultivate the habits that lead to a strong, mature, and fruitful life.

Disciples’ Life Tip: Ask yourself this challenging but crucial question today: “Am I spiritually growing, or just spiritually existing?” Be honest with yourself and with God, and tell Him you’re ready for the next step in your growth journey.

Closing Prayer: Lord, forgive us for being content with stagnation. Create in us a deep desire to grow in our love for You and our knowledge of You. We’re ready to reach up. Amen.
