Being a Peacemaker

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

By Andrew Williams

Good morning fellow disciples, in this series we will be answering questions that will help us to become faithful disciples of Christ.

Being a peacemaker is a fundamental aspect of living out our faith as followers of Christ. It involves actively seeking to create harmony and reconciliation in a world often marked by conflict and division.

HERE ARE SOME KEY PRINCIPLES THAT DEFINE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A PEACEMAKER.

1. Understanding God’s Heart for Peace

“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” (1 Corinthians 14:33)

God’s nature is rooted in peace, and as His children, we are called to reflect that nature. To be a peacemaker, we must first understand that God desires peace for our lives and relationships. This understanding compels us to pursue peace in our interactions with others, mirroring His character in a world filled with turmoil.

2. Pursuing Reconciliation

“So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” (Matthew 5:23-24)

Being a peacemaker often means taking the initiative to reconcile broken relationships. This requires humility and a willingness to seek forgiveness and make amends. Jesus teaches us that reconciliation is so important that it takes precedence over our religious duties. We must prioritize restoring relationships in our lives.

3. Listening and Understanding

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” (James 1:19)

Effective peacemaking involves listening to others with empathy and understanding. When conflicts arise, we should strive to hear different perspectives and validate others’ feelings. By being slow to speak and quick to listen, we create an environment where peace can flourish.

4. Promoting Unity

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3)

Peacemakers actively promote unity within their communities. This means fostering relationships that transcend differences and working toward common goals. As believers, we are called to maintain the unity of the Spirit, recognizing that our bond in Christ is stronger than any division.

5. Responding with Love

“But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44)

Being a peacemaker requires us to respond to conflict with love rather than retaliation. Jesus calls us to love our enemies, which is a radical approach to conflict resolution. This love can break down barriers and transform hostile situations into opportunities for understanding and healing.

6. Standing for Justice

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6)

Peacemaking is not passive; it often involves standing up for justice and speaking out against injustice. True peace cannot exist where there is oppression or wrongdoing. As peacemakers, we must advocate for what is right, striving for a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

7. Relying on God’s Strength

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

Finally, being a peacemaker is not something we can achieve on our own; we need God’s strength and wisdom. Pray for guidance and the ability to be an agent of peace in your relationships and community. Trust that God will equip you with the grace to respond to conflict in a way that honors Him.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for calling me to be a peacemaker. Help me to reflect Your heart for peace in my life and relationships.

Give me the courage to pursue reconciliation where there is conflict and the wisdom to listen and understand others. May I promote unity and respond with love, even in challenging situations.

Teach me to stand for justice and to advocate for those who are oppressed. I recognize that I cannot be a peacemaker in my own strength; I rely on You to guide and empower me.

Thank You for the blessing of being a peacemaker. May my life bring glory to You and contribute to the peace of Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
