“And when they [Paul and Barnabas] had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.” – Acts 14:23 (ESV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
Acts 14:23 reveals Barnabas and Paul’s commitment to the long -term health and stability of the newly established churches. As they retraced their steps, they didn’t simply leave the believers to fend for themselves. Instead, they “appointed elders for them in every church,” demonstrating their intentional focus on developing local leadership. The verse emphasizes that this process was bathed in prayer and fasting, underscoring the importance of seeking God’s guidance in selecting and entrusting leaders to care for His flock. Finally, they committed them to the Lord, knowing he is the only one in whom they can put their trust.
As a disciple, you are called to invest in the lives of others and to contribute to the building up of the church. Barnabas’ example reminds you of the importance of identifying, equipping, and empowering future leaders. You are empowered to be a mentor, a coach, and a source of encouragement to those who have been called to lead.
This week, consider how you can invest in the lives of potential leaders in your church or community. Identify individuals who demonstrate leadership qualities and offer to mentor them, to provide them with opportunities to serve, and to encourage them in their growth. Pray for wisdom and discernment in identifying and developing future leaders.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be a faithful steward of Your church and to invest in the lives of future leaders. Give me the wisdom to identify those whom You have called to lead, the patience to mentor them, and the generosity to provide them with opportunities to serve. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
