“By Silvanus [Silas], a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.” – 1 Peter 5:12 (ESV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
1 Peter 5:12 provides a final, yet powerful testament to the enduring faithfulness and valuable service of Silas (Silvanus). Many years after his travels with Paul, Silas is now serving alongside the Apostle Peter, acting as his trusted amanuensis, or scribe, for the writing of 1 Peter. Peter describes Silas as “a faithful brother as I regard him” and notes that he has “written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God.” This underscores Silas’ humility, his willingness to serve in various roles, and his consistent commitment to proclaiming the Gospel of grace.
As a disciple, you may be called to serve in different capacities throughout your life, some more visible than others. Silas’ example reminds you that every role is valuable and that faithfulness in the small things is just as important as leadership on a grand scale. You are empowered to use your gifts, your skills, and your experience to support the ministry of others, to amplify their message, and to point people to the true grace of God.
This week, reflect on how you can use your gifts and talents to support the ministry of others. Are you willing to serve behind the scenes, to offer your assistance, or to amplify the message of those who are leading? Look for opportunities to be a “Silas” – a faithful and reliable servant who makes a difference, regardless of the role.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be a faithful and reliable servant, willing to use my gifts and talents to support the ministry of others. Give me a heart of humility and a desire to serve You with all that I am. May my life be a testament to Your love, Your grace, and Your unwavering faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen
