A Vindicated Heart- Barnabas’ Faith in Mark Confirmed

June 27, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions—if he comes to you, welcome him),” – Colossians 4:10 (ESV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Colossians 4:10, written by Paul during his imprisonment in Rome, provides a subtle but significant affirmation of Barnabas’ earlier judgment. In sending greetings, Paul mentions Mark, identifying him as “the cousin of Barnabas.” More importantly, he adds, “concerning whom you have received instructions—if he comes to you, welcome him.” This suggests that Paul had previously instructed the Colossians about Mark and that he now recognized Mark’s restored usefulness in ministry. This indirectly vindicates Barnabas’ earlier faith in Mark, showing that his encouragement and second chance had ultimately paid off.

As a disciple, you are called to have faith in others, to believe in their potential, and to offer them grace and second chances, even when they have made mistakes. Barnabas’ example reminds you that people can change, that God can redeem their past, and that your encouragement can make a significant difference in their lives. Don’t be afraid to invest in those who may have stumbled; your belief in them may be the very thing they need to rise again.

This week, think of someone in your life who may have made mistakes or who may be struggling to find their purpose. Reach out to them and offer your encouragement, your support, and your belief in their potential. Let them know that you see value in them and that you are confident that they can overcome their challenges.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to have faith in others, to believe in their potential, and to offer them grace and second chances. Give me the wisdom to see beyond their mistakes and to recognize their God-given gifts. Empower me to be a source of encouragement, support, and hope in their lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
