A Lingering Presence- Silas’ Dedication to Continued Ministry

July 7, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.” – Acts 15:34 (KJV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Acts 15:34, while omitted in many modern translations, offers an intriguing detail about Silas. This verse, found in the KJV and NKJV (and present in some ancient manuscripts), suggests that Silas chose to remain in Antioch even after Judas Barsabbas returned to Jerusalem. While its authenticity is debated, the verse highlights Silas’ potential commitment to prolonged ministry in Antioch. It also emphasizes that no matter what our calling is, there is good reason for redirecting our focus, and trusting in God.

As a disciple, you may face decisions about whether to stay in a familiar place or to move on to new challenges. Silas’ willingness to remain in Antioch, even after his initial task was completed, reminds you that sometimes the greatest impact comes from staying put, building relationships, and investing in a community over the long term. Your consistent presence and your sustained commitment can make a significant difference in the lives of those around you.

This week, reflect on your own commitment to your church, your community, or your ministry. Are you tempted to move on to something new, or are you willing to commit for the long haul? Consider the value of staying put, building relationships, and investing in the lives of those around you.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be faithful and committed to the people and the places that you have called me to serve. Give me the wisdom to know when to stay and when to move on. Strengthen my commitment to the long-term and help me to build relationships that are characterized by trust, love, and support. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
