A Heritage of Faith- Timothy’s Early Life and Call to Ministry

July 21, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.” – Acts 16:1-3 (ESV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Acts 16:1-3 introduces us to Timothy, a young disciple living in Lystra. The passage highlights several key aspects of his life: he had a Jewish mother who was a believer, but his father was Greek; he was well-respected by the believers in both Lystra and Iconium; and Paul chose him to be his traveling companion. Paul then circumcised Timothy, as a strategic move to remove any potential barriers to ministry among the Jewish people. This sets the stage for Timothy’s significant role in the expansion of the early church.

As a disciple, you may come from a diverse background, with a mix of influences and experiences. Timothy’s example reminds you that God can use your unique heritage, your reputation, and your willingness to serve to make a difference in the world. Embrace your background, honor your heritage, and trust that God will equip you for the calling He has placed on your life.

This week, reflect on your own background and identify any influences or experiences that have shaped your faith. Express gratitude for the faithful individuals who have poured into your life and seek opportunities to use your gifts and talents to serve God and to bless others. What steps can you take to help others that are on their path?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you for my unique background and for the people who have shaped my faith. Help me to embrace my heritage, to honor those who have poured into my life, and to use my gifts and talents to serve you and to bless others. Empower me to be a faithful and effective disciple, making a difference in the world for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
