From then on, Jesus began to tell his disciples that he, the Son of Man, was destined to go to Jerusalem and suffer great injustice from the elders, leading priests, and religious scholars. He also explained that he would be killed and three days later be raised to life again. Jesus opened his heart and spoke freely with his disciples, explaining all these things to them. Then Peter took him aside and rebuked him. But Jesus turned around, and glancing at all of the other disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, “Get out of my sight, Satan! For your heart is not set on God’s plan but man’s!”
Mark 8:31-33 TPT
Good morning fellow disciples.
How do you respond when your loved ones tell you that they expect to die soon?
How do you respond when a loved one tells you that pretty soon they are going to be a parent?
The prospect of death generally brings the emotion of sadness. The prospect of new life generally brings the emotion of happiness.
When someone we love tells us that they’re going to die, especially when they are young or seemingly in good health, we tend to respond with fear, doubt, sadness, and especially anger when they say this seemingly awful thing.
“Mi a go dead soon ehnuh!”
“I am just going to the doctor so that you won’t have any problems when I pass on. I just want to ensure that you get the certificate so that you can bury me soon.”
“Son, daughter, spouse, parent: it’s not long now until I’m gone and I just want to let you know that you’re going to have to take over my responsibilities.”
Kiss mi teeth! Mi Nuh love hear them suppen Deh ehnuh!
I can imagine myself talking to Jesus like Peter did, because I would not want my Lord and Master to leave me.
I love Him so much. How could he be saying these things that are so painful to accept? But death is something that we face daily and we need to ask God for the grace to deal with the loss of those that we love.
We need to also live as Kingdom disciples who help others to prepare for their death as well as preparing them for our death. We have the hope that we will be with Jesus and that they will be with Jesus once we all depart this life.
Prayer: Lord God, it is not easy to speak of death, experience the death of loved ones or, to prepare others for our death. Help us to live for You and help us to help others to live for You, so that when we die, we will live forever with you. Amen
