And they arrived at Capernaum; and when [they were] in the house, He asked them, What were you discussing and arguing about on the road? But they kept still, for on the road they had discussed and disputed with one another as to who was the greatest. And He sat down and called the Twelve [apostles], and He said to them, If anyone desires to be first, he must be last of all, and servant of all. And He took a little child and put him in the center of their group; and taking him in [His] arms, He said to them, Whoever in My name and for My sake accepts and receives and welcomes one such child also accepts and receives and welcomes Me; and whoever so receives Me receives not only Me but Him Who sent Me.
Mark 9:33-37 AMPC
Good morning fellow disciples.
Are you like the disciples who spend time with God but you don’t really focus on Him in the time that you spend with Him? Are you so concerned about being better than the rest of your fellow disciples that you lose sight of God who is walking alongside you?
After being asked what they were discussing and arguing about on the road the verse says: “But they kept still, for on the road they had discussed and disputed with one another as to who was the greatest.”
These were the disciples that Jesus empowered to preach the gospel, heal the sick, and to cast out demons. They had gone out and done these things. Now they are back together in the presence of their Lord and Master, and they were arguing about which one of them was the greatest!
They had all been given the same charge, the same anointing, and the same duties. What made them think that any of them should be better than the other? It’s the same in today’s world. Some want different titles within the church to say that they are better than others.
Apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher, elder, deacon, minister, or any other such title sometimes make us feel as if we are better than our fellow disciple. But this is not what God desires of us. God wants us to accept His anointing and humbly go out and do His will!
It’s not about us! IT IS ABOUT GOD!
My brothers and sisters, it’s not a competition between us. It’s a fellowship. It’s about us working together to advance the Kingdom of God.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, of all who were present that day, You were the greatest. You will always be the greatest! As we redirect our focus on this matter of greatness, may we realize that our role is to magnify Father God, and to live our lives the way that you did Lord Jesus.
You surrendered and submitted Yourself to the will of God, and humbly came to this earth to humbly serve God and mankind. We want to be great in the kingdom of God so will emulate Your example Lord Jesus, living our lives the way that You did while You were here on earth. Amen.
