Series: The Year of the Prophet- Month 10: The New Testament Prophet & Christ
Week 38: The Forerunner (John the Baptist)
Anchor Scripture: “But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’” — Matthew 11:9–10 (NKJV)
The Teaching
Jesus said that John was “more than a prophet.” This is a mysterious statement. How can someone be more than the office they hold? The answer lies in the concept of Embodiment. Most prophets spend their lives pointing to a word from God. But John was unique because he was the literal fulfillment of the words spoken hundreds of years before him. His very existence on the riverbank was the “Performance” of Malachi’s and Isaiah’s “Promises.”
John was a “Walking Prophecy.” He didn’t just have a message; he was the message. His clothing, his diet, his location, and his timing were all dictated by a script written in Heaven before he was born. He didn’t just speak about the transition; he was the transition.
This is the standard Jesus sets for the New Covenant office: You are called to be more than a speaker. In the Old Testament, the Spirit came upon the prophet to give a word. In the New Testament, the Word becomes flesh in the messenger. You are called to be a “Living Epistles” (2 Corinthians 3:2). When people see your life, they shouldn’t just hear a “correct prediction”; they should see a “current reality” of the Kingdom of God.
Prophetic Insight
Maturity is moving from “Doing Prophecy” to “Being Prophetic.” If you only operate in the office when you are behind a microphone or praying for someone, you are a “Part-Time Prophet.” But the New Covenant invites you to a “Full-Time Embodiment.” Your character, your marriage, and your integrity are the primary ways you “prophesy” to the world. Like John, your life should be a “Sign and a Wonder” (Isaiah 8:18). When God wants to speak to a city, He doesn’t just send a sentence; He sends a Person. You are a “Mortal Gift” (Day 1) from Christ to the Church. Your highest authority comes not from the words you say, but from the Word you have become.
The Activation
Identify a specific Scripture or “Prophetic Word” that God has spoken over your life—a promise of restoration, a call to holiness, or a mandate to lead. Today, stop waiting for that word to “happen” to you. Start embodying it. If God called you a “Restorer,” go restore something today. If He called you “Holy,” walk in purity today. Live as if the prophecy is already fulfilled in your physical actions.
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You that I am fearfully and wonderfully made to fulfill Your purposes. I ask for the grace to be ‘more than a prophet.’ I don’t want to just speak Your Word; I want to be Your Word in action. Forgive me for being a messenger who doesn’t match the Message. I choose today to embody Your Truth. Let my life be a living fulfillment of Your plans. I am Your sign to this generation. Amen.
