Series: The Year of the Prophet- Month 8: False Prophets & Mature Discernment
Week 31: Fruit Over Gifts (The Character Test)
Anchor Scripture: “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.” — Galatians 1:8 (NKJV)
The Teaching
One of the primary markers of a false or “polluted” prophet is the claim to possess a “Higher Revelation” that supersedes the written Word of God. They often use phrases like, “I know the Bible says X, but God told me Y,” or “This is a secret truth that wasn’t revealed to the apostles.” Paul’s response to this is radical and uncompromising: even if an angel from heaven says it, if it contradicts the established Gospel, it is a lie.
The Canon (the 66 books of the Bible) is the final, finished standard for all truth. While the Prophet is called to hear the “Rhema” (the now word for the moment), the “Rhema” must always be in perfect Consistency with the Logos (the written Word). The Holy Spirit is the Author of the Scriptures; He will never “contradict Himself” by giving a new revelation that violates the character, the principles, or the mandates He has already set in print.
A false prophet often tries to lure people into “Deep Waters” that are actually “Dark Waters.” They use “mystery” and “newness” as a way to bypass biblical discernment. But the Prophet is the guardian of the Ancient Paths (Day 148). Your authority is not in your ability to “innovate,” but in your ability to Illuminate what God has already spoken. Any “word” that leads toward sin, towards a different “way of salvation,” or away from the core doctrines of the faith is a “strange fire” (Day 221).
Prophetic Insight
Maturity in the office requires you to be a Student of the Book. If you aren’t grounded in the Bible, your “revelation” will eventually drift. The Word is the “Anchor” that keeps the prophetic “Vessel” from being swept away by the currents of mysticism or the “spirit of the age” (Day 127). If someone gives you a “prophetic word” that doesn’t “sound like the Bible,” trust your gut. The Holy Spirit’s voice has a specific Biblical Texture. If the texture is missing, the source is wrong. Never apologize for holding a “prophetic superstar” to the standard of the Scriptures. If they are “too deep” for the Word, they are too deep for you.
The Activation
Identify a “revelation” or a “new idea” you’ve been pondering. Today, perform a Scriptural Alignment Test. Find at least three passages of Scripture that support the spirit and the letter of that idea. If you can’t find them, or if you find Scriptures that contradict it, discard the idea immediately. Say to the Lord: “Your Word is the final authority. I refuse to follow any voice—including my own—that deviates from Your Written Truth.”
Daily Prayer: Lord God, I thank You for the rock-solid foundation of the Scriptures. I ask for a deeper love and a greater hunger for Your Word. Forgive me for being seduced by ‘newness’ at the expense of ‘Truth.’ I choose today to anchor my gift in the Canon of Scripture. Let every word I speak be a reflection of Your eternal Word. I refuse any revelation that does not lead me back to Your Cross and Your Truth. Amen.
