Series: The Year of the Prophet- Month 4: The Seer Realm & Divine Senses

Week 16: Discerning the “Burden of the Lord” (Feeling & Knowing)

Anchor Scripture: “The burden [Massa] against Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.” — Nahum 1:1 (NKJV)

As we enter Week 16, we move from the Visual (Seeing) to the Visceral (Feeling), focusing on the “intuitive” and “empathetic” side of the prophetic. While a prophet is a “Seer,” they are also a “Senser.” This week is about the physical and intuitive experience of the prophetic office—learning to handle the “Burden of the Lord.”

The Teaching
In the Old Testament, many prophetic books begin with a specific word: Massa. In most English Bibles, it is translated as “oracle” or “prophecy,” but the literal Hebrew meaning is “a burden” or “something lifted up and carried.” It refers to a heavy load placed upon a beast of burden.

This reveals a profound truth about the prophetic office: revelation is not always a “thought” in the mind; often, it is a weight in the body. Before the prophet has a single word to speak, they feel a spiritual “gravity.” It might manifest as a pressure in the chest, a heaviness in the spirit, or a physical “ache” that cannot be explained by natural circumstances. This is the Massa—the weight of God’s intention concerning a specific matter.

God places this burden on the prophet to ensure the word is handled with the proper solemnity. You cannot deliver a “heavy” word with a “light” spirit. The Massa forces the prophet to feel the seriousness of the message. Just as a pregnant woman carries the weight of the life within her and can only find relief through “travail” and delivery, the prophet carries the Massa until it is birthed through prayer or proclamation.

Prophetic Insight
If you have ever felt a sudden, unexplained heaviness that made you want to “sigh” or “groan” in the spirit, do not be quick to label it as depression or anxiety. Anxiety is a weight about your future; a Massa is a weight about God’s purposes. The prophetic office requires you to be a “spiritual pack-animal.” You are called to carry the “heaviness” of God’s heart so that it can be translated into the language of men. The relief you feel after you pray or deliver a word is the literal “unloading” of the Massa. You were designed to carry it, but you were not designed to keep it.

The Activation
Today, pay attention to your “Internal Weight.” If you feel a sudden “pressure” or “heaviness” in your spirit, stop and ask the Holy Spirit: Lord, is this a Massa? What are You asking me to carry?” Instead of trying to “cheer yourself up,” lean into the weight. Spend 10 minutes in quiet intercession, “groaning” in the spirit (Romans 8:26) until you feel the weight lift.

Daily Prayer: Lord God, I thank You for trusting me to carry the weight of Your Word. I ask for the strength to handle the ‘Massa’ of Your heart. Forgive me for confusing Your burdens with my own anxieties. Teach me how to ‘lift up’ what You are showing me and how to release it in Your perfect timing. I am Your servant; let my spirit be a faithful vessel for Your heavy intentions. Amen.
