He Is (Week 1: The Foundational Names)
Opening Prayer
Most High God, we bow before Your throne today, acknowledging Your absolute sovereignty over our lives and over all creation.
Today’s Scripture (NLT)
Genesis 14:19
“…’Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.'”
In this passage, Abram encounters Melchizedek, a priest of El Elyon, which means “God Most High.” This name emphasizes God’s supreme authority and exalted position. He is the sovereign ruler over everything—every king, every nation, every power in heaven and on earth. There is no one and nothing higher than El Elyon.
This name reveals that God is the ultimate possessor and ruler of all He has made. Melchizedek calls him “Creator of heaven and earth,” linking His right to rule with His act of creation. To know God as El Elyon is to find peace in His absolute sovereignty. It means that nothing happens outside of His knowledge and control. Political turmoil, personal struggles, and global events are all under the authority of the Most High God.
When your circumstances feel chaotic and overwhelming, remembering El Elyon lifts your perspective. Your problems may seem big to you, but they are under the feet of the Most High God. He sits on the throne, and His purposes will always prevail.
Disciple’s Life Tip: Interact with God as El Elyon. Take a specific worry or problem that is weighing on you, and in prayer, verbally place it under the authority of El Elyon, the Most High God. Acknowledge that He is higher and greater than your problem.
Closing Prayer: El Elyon, Most High God, I submit to Your sovereign rule. Help me to rest in the truth that You are on the throne and Your purposes cannot be thwarted. Amen.
