Opening Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank you for making your home in us. Help us to be aware of your presence and to yield to your guidance today.
Today’s Scripture (NLT)
John 14:17
“He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”
The concept of abiding has two incredible sides. We are commanded to abide, or remain, in Christ. But the miracle that makes this possible is that Christ, through the Holy Spirit, abides in us. This isn’t a one-way street. It is a mutual, indwelling relationship.
Jesus promised His disciples that while He had been with them, the Holy Spirit would soon be in them. If you are a believer in Jesus, this promise is true for you. The third person of the Trinity, God Himself, has taken up residence within you. He is your constant companion, your guide into truth, your comforter, and your source of power.
Understanding this changes everything. Abiding is not just you trying to reach out to a distant God. It is you learning to recognize and cooperate with the God who is already living inside you. It’s listening to His gentle promptings, relying on His strength, and drawing on His wisdom. The 24/7 Christian life is an inside-out reality, powered by the very presence of God within.
Disciples’ Life Tip: Practice the prayer of awareness. As you go about your day, especially when facing a decision or a challenge, pause and pray this simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, you are in me. What are you saying? How are you leading me right now?”
Closing Prayer: Father God, what an incredible gift that you choose to make your home in us. Help us to live in the reality of your indwelling presence every moment of this day. Amen.
