June 3, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.” – Acts 4:36-37 (NLT)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Acts 4:36-37 introduces us to Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, who would become known as Barnabas. This isn’t just a name change; it’s a reflection of his character. The apostles renamed him Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement,” highlighting his gift for uplifting and inspiring others. What immediately follows is a demonstration of extraordinary generosity. Barnabas sells a field he owns and brings the entire proceeds to the apostles to support the needs of the growing church. This act reveals a man of practical compassion and unwavering commitment to the early Christian community.

As a disciple, you are called to be both generous and encouraging. Barnabas’ example challenges you to examine your own heart and to consider how you can use your resources, your words, and your actions to uplift and support others. The world needs encouragers, and the Body of Christ especially needs individuals who can build up and strengthen their brothers and sisters in faith. You are empowered to be a source of hope, a voice of encouragement, and a channel of God’s provision in the lives of those around you.

This week, consider how you can be a “Barnabas” to someone in your life. Look for opportunities to offer words of encouragement, to provide practical assistance, or to share your resources with those in need. Be intentional about using your gifts and talents to uplift and inspire others.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be a source of encouragement and generosity in the lives of those around me. Give me the wisdom to discern their needs and the courage to respond with compassion. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, so that my words and actions may be a blessing to others and may reflect Your love and Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
