Obedient Baptism- Philip’s Act of Faith and Inclusion

May 31, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“And he ordered the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.” – Acts 8:38 (ESV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Acts 8:38 captures the beautiful culmination of Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch. After Philip explained the scriptures and shared the good news about Jesus, the eunuch believed and desired to be baptized. Without hesitation, “he ordered the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.” This act of obedience and inclusion highlights Philip’s commitment to following the leading of the Holy Spirit and his willingness to welcome new believers into the Christian faith.

As a disciple, you are called to be a welcoming presence and to help others take the next step in their faith journey. Philip’s example reminds you that baptism is an important act of obedience and a public declaration of one’s commitment to Christ. You are empowered to encourage new believers to be baptized and to support them as they grow in their faith. You are also empowered to extend the grace and welcome that Christ brings to others, regardless of background or origin.

This week, consider how you can encourage and support new believers in their journey of faith. Reach out to those who have recently made a commitment to Christ and offer your friendship, your prayers, and your guidance. If you know someone who is considering baptism, encourage them to take that step of obedience.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be a welcoming presence in the lives of new believers and to encourage them in their journey of faith. Give me the wisdom to guide them, the compassion to support them, and the courage to challenge them to grow in their relationship with you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
