“Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot,” – Mark 3:18 (NIV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
Mark 3:18 presents a list of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus, with Matthew included among them. While there are no specific details provided about Matthew’s character or calling in this verse, his inclusion is significant. It shows that Jesus deliberately chose Matthew, a former tax collector (a profession despised by many), to be a part of His inner circle. This underscores the inclusive nature of Jesus’ ministry and His willingness to embrace people from all walks of life.
As a disciple, you may sometimes feel ordinary, insignificant, or unworthy to be a part of God’s plan. Matthew’s example reminds you that God doesn’t always choose the most qualified or the most impressive people. He often chooses the ordinary, the overlooked, and the unexpected. Your background, your past mistakes, or your perceived limitations do not disqualify you from being used by God. You are empowered to embrace your ordinariness and to trust that God can use you in powerful ways, just as He used Matthew. By redirecting your focus to God and what he has in store, you can accomplish his mission.
This week, embrace your unique identity and recognize that God has a plan for you, just as you are. Don’t compare yourself to others or try to be someone you’re not. Instead, focus on using your gifts, talents, and experiences to serve God and to make a difference in the world.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me to be Your disciple, just as I am. Help me to embrace my unique identity and to trust that You have a plan for my life. Give me the courage to use my gifts, talents, and experiences to serve You and to make a difference in the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
