“After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.” – Luke 5:27-28 (NIV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
Luke 5:27-28 recounts the transformative call of Levi, also known as Matthew. Jesus, seeing Levi, a tax collector, sitting at his tax booth, simply says, “Follow me.” The immediate response of Levi is striking: he “got up, left everything, and followed him.” This passage underscores the power and authority of Jesus’ call and the radical nature of true discipleship. Tax collectors were despised for working with the Roman Empire, but Jesus called Levi anyway.
As a disciple, you are called to respond to Jesus’ invitation with similar radical obedience. He may not ask you to literally leave everything, but He may call you to re-evaluate your priorities, to relinquish control, and to follow His leading in new and challenging ways. You are empowered to trust in His promise that He will provide for your needs and guide you on the right path. Just as Levi left behind his former life and identity, Jesus can transform you and equip you for a new purpose.
This week, prayerfully consider what areas in your life Jesus may be calling you to surrender to Him. Are there habits, relationships, or possessions that are hindering your ability to fully follow Him? Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the courage to step out in faith and to embrace the new direction He is leading you.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I surrender my life to You, and I ask for the courage to follow You wherever You may lead. Show me the areas in my life that are holding me back from fully embracing Your call. Give me the faith to trust in Your promise to provide for my needs and to guide me on the right path. Transform me and equip me for the new purpose You have for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
