The Gatekeeper- Philip’s Role in Connecting Others to Jesus

May 18, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell Andrew; then Andrew and Philip told Jesus.” – John 12:20-22 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

John 12:20-22 illustrates Philip’s approachable nature and his role as a gatekeeper or intermediary. Some Greeks, seeking to meet Jesus, approach Philip, who was from Bethsaida. It is implied they sought him out because they knew he was one of Jesus’ disciples. Philip, perhaps unsure of how to proceed, then consults Andrew, and together they bring the request to Jesus. This passage reveals Philip as a trusted point of contact and a facilitator for those seeking an audience with Jesus.

As a disciple, you, too, can be a bridge between others and Christ. Like Philip, you may not always have all the answers or know exactly how to help someone, but you can be a welcoming presence and a trusted guide. Your willingness to listen, to offer support, and to connect people with Jesus can have a profound impact on their lives. Don’t underestimate the power of being a connector.

This week, be aware of those around you who may be seeking spiritual guidance or connection. Make yourself available to listen, offer support, and point them toward Jesus. If you’re unsure how to help, seek guidance from other mature believers. Remember, your role is not to have all the answers, but to facilitate access to the one who does.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be a welcoming and trustworthy presence in the lives of those around me. Give me the wisdom to know how to guide them towards You and to connect them with other believers who can support them on their journey. May I be a bridge, a facilitator, and a point of contact for those seeking You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
