“When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” – John 6:5-7 (NIV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
John 6:5-7 captures a moment where Jesus tests Philip’s understanding and faith. Faced with a huge crowd and a lack of food, Jesus asks Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” Philip’s response is practical, almost mathematical: “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” This showcases Philip’s ability to assess a situation logically and to recognize the apparent impossibility of the task.
As a disciple, you will encounter situations that seem overwhelming or impossible. You may be tempted to focus on the problem, to assess the limitations, and to conclude that there is no solution. Philip’s example reminds you that while it’s important to be realistic, it’s also important to trust in God’s power to overcome any obstacle. Your ability to assess a situation logically can be valuable, but don’t let your logic limit your faith in God’s ability to work miracles.
This week, when faced with a seemingly impossible situation, take a moment to assess the reality of the problem. Acknowledge your limitations but then shift your focus to God’s power and His ability to provide. Pray for guidance and trust that He will show you the way forward. It is important to redirect your focus to God in these hard situations.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I acknowledge the challenges and limitations I face. Help me to assess situations realistically, but also to trust in Your power to overcome any obstacle. Give me the wisdom to see beyond the limitations and to believe in Your ability to provide. Guide me and empower me to be a part of Your solution. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
