The Call to Follow- Philip’s Simple Obedience

May 14, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.” – John 1:43-44 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

John 1:43-44 recounts the straightforward call of Philip to become a disciple of Jesus. Jesus, intending to travel to Galilee, finds Philip and simply says, “Follow me.” The verse also notes that Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from Bethsaida, highlighting a shared background and community connection. This passage underscores the simplicity of Jesus’s call to discipleship and the potential for anyone, regardless of their background, to respond in obedience.

As a disciple, you may be waiting for a complex or elaborate calling from God, but Jesus’s invitation to Philip reminds you that sometimes the call is simple and direct: “Follow me.” You are empowered to respond to Jesus’s invitation with immediate obedience, trusting that He will lead you on the right path and equip you for the journey. Your willingness to follow Him, even when you don’t fully understand where He is leading, demonstrates your faith and your commitment to His Lordship.

This week, listen for Jesus’s simple invitation to “follow me” in your daily life. Be open to the possibility that He may be calling you to step out of your comfort zone, to embrace a new challenge, or to make a change in your priorities. Redirect your focus and listen for God’s voice. Respond with immediate obedience, trusting that He will guide you every step of the way.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to hear Your simple invitation to “follow You” in my daily life. Give me the courage to step out of my comfort zone, to embrace new challenges, and to make changes in my priorities, as You direct. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, so that I may be obedient to Your calling and may follow You with all my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
