The Bitter Truth- Judas’s Calling, Choice, and Tragedy

April 16, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons. These were the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.” – Mark 3:13-16,19 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Mark 3:13-16,19 is a poignant reminder that even within the intimate circle of Jesus’ chosen disciples, there existed the potential for betrayal. Judas Iscariot, explicitly named as one of the twelve, was called by Jesus Himself, given authority to preach and drive out demons, and invited into a close relationship with the Messiah. However, the verse concludes with the stark reality: “Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.” This passage serves as a sobering reflection on the mystery of free will and the tragic consequences of choices that lead away from God’s intended path.

As a disciple, you have also been called, chosen, and equipped for a purpose. You have been given gifts, talents, and opportunities to serve God and to make a difference in the world. But like Judas, you also have the freedom to choose whether to walk in obedience or to stray from God’s path. This passage reminds us that even with a privileged position and bestowed authority, one can still make choices that lead to ruin. Therefore, remain vigilant, humble, and always dependent on God’s grace to guide your steps.

This week, take time to examine your heart and to assess the choices you are making. Are you aligning your will with God’s will? Are you using your gifts and talents to serve Him and others? Are you guarding against temptation and seeking accountability? Be honest with yourself and ask God to reveal any areas where you may be straying from His path.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, search my heart and reveal any hidden areas of sin or temptation. Help me to align my will with Your will and to use my gifts and talents to serve You and others. Give me the strength to resist temptation and to seek accountability in my life. Keep me humble, vigilant, and always dependent on Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
