By Andrew Williams
“Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter), his brother Andrew…” – Matthew 10:1-2 (NIV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
Matthew 10:1-2 marks a significant moment as Jesus commissions His twelve disciples, including Andrew, for ministry. He not only calls them by name, but also grants them tangible power and authority – “to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.” This passage highlights that discipleship isn’t passive; it’s an active participation in Jesus’ mission, empowered by His authority and sent out with a specific purpose. Andrew, along with the others, was equipped to extend God’s Kingdom in practical and powerful ways.
As a disciple, you, too, have been given a commission and a purpose. While you may not be called to the exact same tasks as the twelve apostles, you are empowered to participate in God’s mission in your sphere of influence. Through the Holy Spirit, you have been given gifts, talents, and abilities to extend God’s Kingdom, to share the Gospel, and to minister to the needs of others. You are not just a recipient of God’s grace, but also a vessel of His power and a messenger of His love.
This week, prayerfully consider how God is calling you to use your gifts, talents, and abilities to serve Him and others. Look for opportunities to minister to those in need, to share the Gospel, and to extend God’s Kingdom in your community and beyond. Don’t be afraid to step out in faith, trusting that God will equip you for the task He has called you to do.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you for commissioning me to participate in your mission and for empowering me with your Holy Spirit. Show me how you are calling me to use my gifts, talents, and abilities to serve you and others. Give me the courage to step out in faith, trusting that you will equip me for the task you have called me to do. May my life be a reflection of your love and may I be a vessel of your power in the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
